JULIA MORGAN AWARDS: CELEBRATING COLLABORATION

Missy and Ed Westbrook with QuarryHouse’s 2022 Julia Moran Award for Craftsmanship & Artisanship

Winners and peers recently gathered in the celadon and parcel-gilt Beaux-Arts splendor of San Francisco's The Green Room to celebrate The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art Northern California Chapter's Julia Morgan Awards. QuarryHouse, who was the Presenting Sponsor for the event, also won the 2022 Craftsmanship & Artisanship award for their stone masonry. They submitted "Pacific Heights Palazzo," an Italian Renaissance-style villa designed in 1927 for an industrialist. After a businessman purchased the 6,848 sq ft estate in 2012, it took eight years and a dream team to restore and renovate it sensitively. QuarryHouse co-founders Ed and Missy Westbrook want to acknowledge all their colleagues who contributed their knowledge and expertise during the project.

Interior designer Suzanne Tucker of Tucker & Marks Design and architect Andy Skurman of Skurman Architects created the aesthetic tone of the villa. Their artistic vision, supported by years of study, work, and travel, imprinted the project. Lead designer Christopher Roy, studio director Pierre Guettier and consulting architect Brier Tomlinson assisted with their plans, and senior project managers Alexander Hobbs and Jeff Morter implemented them. Matt Heintz of Level 10 Construction acted as the general contractor, and Zeterre Landscape Architecture's Stephen Suzman and Jarrod Baumann designed the exquisite Italianate Garden. In addition, QuarryHouse enjoyed the company of other accomplished artisans, including James Stancil of Stancil Studios, Michael Bondi of Michael Bondi Metal Design, mosaics artist Pippa Murray, and Foster Reeve Plaster's Mike Brown.

Ed and Missy especially want to acknowledge all of the stonemasons, project managers, fabricators, and installers who touched the stone on Pacific Heights Palazzo. The list encompasses both the San Francisco Bay Area and Verona, Italy. On the US side, the QuarryHouse staff consists of Senior Project Manager Dillon Westbrook, Head Estimator Jeff Clark, Project Coordinator Cassie Westbrook, Foremen Salvador Ochoa, Herminio Ochoa, Juan Santoyo, Alfredo Escalera Perez, and Shop Foreman Sal Mata. Overseas Project Manager Eugenio Arcangeli heads up QuarryHouse Atelier Verona with Giuseppe Gasparini, Milli Alario, and Nicholas Arcangeli as Master Carvers at Atlantide Marmi. Finally, the Westbrooks would like to thank their Italian partners, Camiran Rasool and Valentina Fraccaroli, of CITCO, for fabrication and finishing.
