One of the first significant contracts QuarryHouse won was in 1990, working with Lawrence Halprin to create the Agave Trail on Alcatraz Island for the Golden Gate National Park Association. The trail dates from the 1910's. Beginning at the dock area, it continues along the shoreline, and then connects, via a long flight of steps, up the slope to the Parade Ground. QuarryHouse rebuilt the pedestrian path, stairs, and low walls with stones that blend with the original rocks. While Alcatraz was a prison, Agave plants with their sharp edges provided a natural deterrent to discourage inmates from escaping. Today as apart of Agave Trail they prevent erosion and beautify the landscape.
